The Story of Gary Cooper and Stage Coach Mary

image
image

Gary Cooper the Movie Star of the 1930’s 40’s and 50’s wrote an article for Ebony Magazine in 1959 shortly before his death. In it he detailed one of his inspirations of Western Heroism. That inspiration was a Black Woman who ran the Stagecoach Line and delivered the US Mail to the remote farmhouse where he grew up in Montana. He wrote of her kindness and his admiration for her. Gary Cooper wanted to make sure that she would be remembered. Her name was “Stagecoach” Mary Fields. Here are her words and here is her story. Stagecoach Mary Fields in her own words.

image

“I am Mary Fields. People call me "Black Mary.” People call me “Stagecoach Mary.” I was born in Cascade, Tennessee. I am six feet tall. I weigh over two hundred pounds. A woman of the 19th Century, I do bold and exciting things. I wear pants. I smoke a big black cigar. I drink whiskey. I carry a pistol. I love adventure. I travel the country, driving a stagecoach, delivering the mail to distant towns.

Strong, I fight through rainstorms. Tough, I fight through snowstorms. I risk hurricanes and tornadoes. I am independent. No body tells me what to do. No body tells me where to go. When I’m not delivering mail, I like to build buildings. I like to smoke and drink in bars with the men. I like to be rough. I like to be rowdy. I also like to be loving. I like to be caring. I like to baby sit. I like to plant flowers and tend my garden. I like to give away corsages and bouquets. I like being me, Mary Fields.“

"Born a slave, somewhere in Tennessee, Mary lived to be one of the freeest souls to ever draw breath or a .38”

Gary Cooper

Read up more about Mary Fields, including how the locals papers once declared that she had broken more noses than anyone in Central Montana.

Right now, and for a “limited time,” anyone in the United States between the age of 13 and 21 can apply for a free Brooklyn Public Library eCard, which gives access to 350,000 eBooks, 200,000 audiobooks, and online databases.

Teens who want to apply for the free eCard can send an email to BooksUnbanned@bklynlibrary.org or a message to @bklynfuture on Instagram.

The original article is from April 15th and as far as I know is still active.

Also, just so everyone over the age of 21 knows, the Brooklyn Public Library is one of the few libraries in the United States that lets you get a library card without being a resident. If you are a resident of New York (anywhere in the state, afaik), a card is free. Anywhere else in the US, and it’s $50 a year for a virtual card like the one being given away for teens. If you live in an area with a smaller library, this could be a great way to get access to a much larger selection of books in Overdrive/Libby, and is way cheaper than something like Kindle Unlimited or Audible.

Holy fuck

This works best if you keep windows closed.

Another design is using 2 20x25x1 filters, taping them to the sides of the box fan and then to each other so they sort of make a triangle, then cutting cardboard to make a top and bottom to the triangle.

This was discovered as a more effective design during the 2020 US west coast fires.

If you live on the west coast of the United States, fire season is coming and this is vital.

We’ve been using one, and they’re great. Might try to make the double filter version this year.

theyve been doing a bunch of studies on this during the pandemic and this design is best! 4 filters and a shroud to optimize flow rate.

My landlord is threatening to evict me because… I’m trans (Canada).

image

Hey everyone. So I have dual American/Canadian citizenship, but I am currently attending graduate school here in Canada. For the past 5 months, I’ve been living in a basement apartment with its own separate bathroom, kitchen, front door, etc. I have also started transitioning with a tgel prescription I receive in the mail. There have been no problems with this arrangement up until recently.

My landlord lives upstairs with her family. Yesterday, I received a call from her about how devoutly religious her household is and the “bad influence” she thinks my transition will have on her kids. The physical changes on HRT developed more quickly than I was expecting and I believe it makes my landlord uncomfortable.

She also sent this text:

(censored personal information)

I am pretty sure that she would be illegally filing a bad faith N12 (Canadian eviction form). But, I don’t have the money to hire a lawyer right now. Plus, I feel deeply uncomfortable rooming here now regardless. So, if she doesn’t evict me I will try to find a subleaser and gtfo. Problem is, I have no where to go! I have no one in my life to fall back on financially, and very few savings which I’m using to pay for my degree. I don’t even have a car or a license currently….

If anyone wants to help out a transmasc mycologist, here is my Cashapp: https://cash.app/$WinstonYang1. I am grateful for anything. If you can’t donate, I would also really appreciate a boost. Thank you!

My first two projects of visible mending, both on my mum’s jeans.
they’re a bit wonky but I love them :)

(thankyou @wastelesscrafts for introducing me to this awsome technique!!)

[ID 1: the knee of a gray pair of jeans. A hole at the knee has been mended with colourful sashiko stitching and a patch of colourful plaid fabric.]

[ID: close-up on a rip in denim fabric. The rip has been patched up with botanical fabric in tones of yellow, red, and brown. Embroidery sits around the rip’s edges and beside of it.]

Those mends look so good! Love the use of colour!
